      <description>BERLIN, Jan 1 (Reuters) - German Chancellor Angela Merkel said on Sunday she opposed banning Iran from the World Cup because of controversial remarks by Iran's president, saying it would be wrong to punish the players for his words. 




Responding to demands to ban Iran because its President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad had said Israel should be moved to Europe and suggested the Holocaust might never have happened, Merkel told the Bild am Sonntag newspaper she doubted the value of a ban.

      <description>HARTFORD, Connecticut, Dec 20 (Reuters) - U.S. coach Bruce Arena named a predominantly home-based 30-man squad on Tuesday for a pre-World Cup January training camp. 




As European-based players are all in mid-season, all but one player named comes from Major League Soccer clubs which do not begin their season until April. 
'We eagerly look forward to seeing our domestic players,' said Arena. 'We want to do the best job we can of making the roster as competitive as possible over the next six months so we can position our team to be successful in the World Cup.'

Hungary have been confirmed as England's first opponents at the new Wembley stadium as part of Sven-Goran Eriksson's preparations for the World Cup finals. 




Hungary were the first team to beat England on home soil, winning 6-3 at the old Wembley stadium in November 1953. 
Now they have been lined up to face England on May 30 at the new Wembley, with Eriksson looking to prepare his side to face Sweden, Trinidad and Tobago and Paraguay in their World Cup group.
